The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass, by Stephen King

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba

The fourth volume in the brilliant Dark Tower Series is “splendidly tense…rip-roaring” (Publishers Weekly)—a #1 national bestseller about an epic quest to save the universe.

In Wizard and Glass, Stephen King is “at his most ebullient…sweeping readers up in…swells of passion” (Publishers Weekly) as Roland the Gunslinger, Eddie, Susannah, and Jake survive Blaine the Mono’s final crash, only to find themselves stranded in an alternate version of Topeka, Kansas, that has been ravaged by the superflu virus. While following the deserted I-70 toward a distant glass palace, Roland recounts his tragic story about a seaside town called Hambry, where he fell in love with a girl named Susan Delgado, and where he and his old tet-mates Alain and Cuthbert battled the forces of John Farson, the harrier who—with a little help from a seeing sphere called Maerlyn’s Grapefruit—ignited Mid-World’s final war.

Filled with “blazing action” (Booklist), the fourth installment in the Dark Tower Series “whets the appetite for more” (Bangor Daily News). Wizard and Glass is a thrilling read from “the reigning King of American popular literature” (Los Angeles Daily News).

Amazon.com Review
Wizard and Glass, the fourth episode in King's white-hot Dark Tower series, is a sci-fi/fantasy novel that contains a post-apocalyptic Western love story twice as long. It begins with the series' star, world-weary Roland, and his world-hopping posse (an ex-junkie, a child, a plucky woman in a wheelchair, and a talking dog-like pet named Oy the Bumbler) trapped aboard a runaway train. The train is a psychotic multiple personality that intends to commit suicide with them at 800 m.p.h.--unless Roland and pals can outwit it in a riddling contest.

It's a great race, for the mind and pulse. Movies should be this good. Then comes a 567-page flashback about Roland at age 14. It's a well-marbled but meaty tale. Roland and two teen homies must rescue his first love from the dirty old drooling mayor of a post-apocalyptic cowboy town, thwart a civil war by blowing up oil tanks, and seize an all-seeing crystal ball from Rhea, a vampire witch. The love scenes are startlingly prominent and earthier than most romance novels (they kiss until blood trickles from her lip).

After an epic battle ending in a box canyon to end all box canyons, we're back with grizzled, grown-up Roland and the train-wreck survivors in a parallel world: Kansas in 1986, after a plague. The finale is a weird fantasy takeoff on The Wizard of Oz. Some readers will feel that the latest novel in King's most ambitious series has too many pages--almost 800--but few will deny it's a page-turner.

From Library Journal
Frank Muller's reading of King's fourth book in a projected seven-part series (e.g., The Waste Lands: The Dark Tower, Bk. 3, Audio Reviews LJ 2/15/92) is effective in creating a suspenseful and fearful atmosphere. We find Roland, the knight errant/gunslinger, continuing his quest to attain the Dark Tower, the source of destructive forces in his Mid-World. A major portion of this work is a recounting by Roland of his ill-fated love affair with Susan Delgado. The writing is expectedly imaginative, the story line engrossing, and the characters vivid. The listener is carried along through alternating Western, urban, and futuristic settings. The work stands on its own, incorporating a summary of Books 1-3, but will be better appreciated if listened to as part of the whole. Recommended for sf/fantasy collections and Stephen King fans.?Catherine Swenson, Norwich Univ. Lib., Northfield, Vt.

From Booklist
The fourth volume in King's protean fantasy saga, The Dark Tower, doesn't advance its heroes' journey to that edifice much from where The Waste Lands (1992) left them, but at least it gets them out of the fix they were in and primed to get into another. The book's 720 pages are mostly devoted to a flashback in which principal protagonist Roland of Mid-World relates his initial exploits--at 14--as a gunslinger. Those adventures involved plenty of mayhem and also his first, ultimately disastrous love affair. King acknowledges in an afterword that it took him a long time to write this story because he was not confident of his ability to write of "the heat and passion of seventeen [sic]." Many may feel his mistrust was well placed, for the romantic stuff is rather a yawn. Unfortunately, the blazing action that succeeds it is hackneyed stuff typical of movie and TV westerns--strictly intentionally, though, for Roland's world of origin is a post^-nuclear holocaust culture that has reverted to earlier ways, including those of knightly chivalry and pistol-packin' cowboys. Still, King is the genre fiction writer's genre fiction writer, and the action that is hackneyed here is also, as noted, blazing--brightly. Ray Olson

The Middle of the Best modern epic story
By Richard Bradley
I don't like writing about these books as though they are independent. As I may have said before, to me, this is one story. I have read the Dark Tower in its entirety at least the times counting now. The first time took years. The second all the way through, which I am doing again now. This time on Kindle. Anyway, this volume is my least favorite. It does hold the beginning and the end together, which is what themiddle should do. The story of Susan is just a little too long. But I know why Roland must tell it, and why King had to write it. You might know too. So now on to the next part. I need to finish it before they release the movie they are making as it cannot live up to what is on these pages or what is in my head. There are more worlds than these.

Anyway, I Liked The Book...
By Leon Fox
There is a lot to commend this book and the author on. From the bending of time, places, our world, other worlds, science, history and fantasy. Needless to say, this isn't a common science fiction book or story.

Generally I would say anyone or everyone would like this story, particularly in light of all the great stuff that lead up to this book 4. Still, this is book 4, so it does "help" to start with book 1. Also you get more out of this if you have at least explored some of our own history, music, places, basically life. References to all these thing (music quite a bit) all make this a better story... if know the reference. If not, still good, just better if you do. You all do know who ZZ Top is and their song Velcro Fly... right?

Also I believe you have to either read this as just light, pre-movie fluff or (as I recommend) a true classic foundation of science fiction that crosses the various genres and strikes deep philosophical cords in the meaning of our lives, place that technology holds on or with us, the matter of cause and effect of our actions or of others and many more deeper meanings.

with each reading it’s getting better (if that’s possible)
By R.A. Marvel
This is my third time reading this series and it hasn’t gotten stale. In fact, with each reading it’s getting better (if that’s possible). Next to The Stand, this series is my favorite SK. There’s no one better at weaving a complex story than SK and The Dark Tower is just that – complex, moving, exciting, terrifying and extremely sad. A majority of the series is set in a fictional world very much like our own and there are “thin” spots where one is able to go between our world and Roland’s world.

**SPOILER**

Roland recounts his youth one evening by the camp fire. His drawn three Susannah, Eddie, Jake plus the billy bumbler Oy are his rapt audience. The story of Susan Delgado and Roland’s youth is like a book within a book and could easily stand on its own. Roland is a newly crowned gunslinger at age 14 and he’s sent away by his father (along with his two best friends Cuthbert and Alain) to the safety of a small village in the west. When the trio arrives they find treachery brewing and Roland finds his first love, the beautiful Susan. Roland is introduced to the Dark Tower via a magic pink glass ball and his quest begins.
The loss that Roland suffers at his young age definitely helps shape him into the man he becomes.

From This It How It Ends to The Long, Hot Summer, what I journey with Kathleen Macmahon
By Christopher
It was always going to be hard to pull off nine voices -- because each time you feel like the story is restarting, and you end up with the impression that you're reading several short stories rather than a complete novel -- but I feel Kathleen did an excellent job. With each new character, there came with it some twist in the plot, and it had the effect that I wanted to keep reading, and reading, and reading until I sat back after two days of constant reading with a finished book on my lap.

A genuinely heart-warming read
By Cloggie Downunder
“In through the nose, out through the mouth, he chanted silently to himself, thinking ruefully of old dogs and new tricks as his thoughts marched off in a new direction. He made a half-hearted attempt to catch them, like a man chasing along a city pavement a scrap of paper or a sweet wrapper that has been picked up by the wind and is dancing away from him, always just out of reach”

The Long, Hot Summer is the second novel by Irish television journalist and author, Kathleen MacMahon. It’s April, 2013, six months until Deidre O’Sullivan’s eightieth birthday and she is flicking through the scrapbook that documents the life of her family: two daughters, a son, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and, of course, the attached spouses and lovers. Both Deidre and her house are feeling their age, what with cataracts, arthritis, an ageing bladder, a leaky roof and an overgrown garden. And her husband Manus is no help, having left her for his young Moroccan lover over twenty years previously. But Manus does make a comment that sows the seed of an idea in her mind: it’s something that will make everyone sit up and take notice.

MacMahon gives eight other members of this extended family a voice: the events (and there are quite a few) of the following six months and how they affect the family are told as they occur, from each successive perspective; Deidre’s views bookend this tale of a long, hot summer that includes sleep deprivation, a mugging, the theft of a pepper-grinder, a shocking public confession, arrest in a foreign country, a tragic car accident, a thirty-year manuscript, yoga, Celebrity Master Chef, a separation, a reconciliation (or two), the death of a political career, a terrible Irish joke and, of course, an eightieth birthday party.

There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments but also some that will have even the most cynical reader choking up. Words of wisdom are spoken and decisions are made. MacMahon gives the reader a cast of appealing characters: Maeve Binchy said of MacMahon’s first novel “…people who are easy to believe in and hard to forget” and this could easily apply here too. She touches on everyday family issues, but also topics like Irish Abortion laws, ageing, sibling rivalry, dementia, death notices and the responsibility for cleaning out blocked drains.

MacMahon has a real talent for descriptive prose: “As Alma listened to them, it seemed that their conversation was like a deck of cards that had been well and truly shuffled and then dealt out, each card appearing at random but still familiar” and “On the screen, Nora was all distorted. Her face was too small, her eyes too big. She looked like a woodland animal who has stumbled upon a secret camera and is inspecting it, oblivious to its purpose” and “…Deidre has been playing a part for so many years that she has long since given up on trying to find the place where her own personality ends and the pretending begins” are examples. A genuinely heart-warming read.

Heart-warming tale of a family supporting each other through adversity
By Deborah Cook (@ Debbish dot com)
I'd deferred reading The Long Hot Summer by Kathleen MacMahon for over a month. I wasn't entirely sure I'd enjoy it and worried it'd be a bit too saga-ish for my short attention span. But (once again) I surprised myself by enjoying this easy and beguiling read set in contemporary Ireland.

Interestingly, although the book opens with Deirdre, she was probably the character I felt I knew least in this new release by MacMahon. Perhaps I wasn't yet sufficiently engaged, or possibly it was an age thing. Having said that, she's not meant to be a particularly likeable character and confesses to being a distant mother; seemingly blaming her children and former husband for a range of ills in her life.

On the other hand I really enjoyed getting to know her daughters, Alma and Acushla and granddaughters, Connie and Nora. All are strong complex characters and we meet them at a time when they're are confronted with major life challenges. MacMahon draws us in so we can relate to what they're going through: we travel on that journey with them, emerging on the other side with understanding and respect.

In terms of the plot, there's no story arc per se. Instead we view (or better still, share) a series of events over a period of time which ultimately draws the family together in ways they least expect.

Crystal Structure Analysis: A Primer (Iucr Texts on Crystallography), by Jenny Pickworth Glusker, Kenneth N. Trueblood

This book aims to explain how and why the detailed three-dimensional architecture of molecules can be determined by an analysis of the diffraction patterns obtained when X rays or neutrons are scattered by the atoms in single crystals. Part 1 deals with the nature of the crystalline state, diffraction generally, and diffraction by crystals in particular, and, briefly, the experimental procedures that are used. Part II examines the problem of converting the experimentally obtained data into a model of the atomic arrangement that scattered these beams. Part III is concerned with the techniques for refining the approximate structure to the degree warranted by the experimental data. It also describes the many types of information that can be learned by modern crystal structure analysis. There is a glossary of terms used and several appendixes to which most of the mathematical details have been relegated.

The best introductory textbook on crystallography. Period
By Dr. Peter Muller
This is the third edition of a real classic! Ever since it first came out in 1971 the Glusker/Trueblood has been one of the best introductory texts on crystallography. It was updated the first time in 1985: Crystal Structure Analysis -- A Primer, second edition, however in the last 25 years crystallography has changed enough to make the second edition seem outdated. Therefore I sometimes preferred the also excellent book by Massa Crystal Structure Determination, which does not cover quite as much ground but was more up-to-date. The "better" is the strongest enemy of the "good" and with the advent of the third edition of the Glusker/Trueblood, I am now recommending "Crystal Structure Analysis: A Primer" by Jenny Glusker and Ken Trueblood without hesitation to anyone who wants to learn more about crystallography. Every aspect from definition of a crystal to the diffraction experiment, phase problem, symmetry in real and reciprocal space, structure refinement and critical interpretation of the results is covered by this fabulous book and every chapter is perfectly up-to-date (even taking into consideration research conducted in 2009).

I would like to point out a few highlights:
(1) The chapter on Direct Methods absolutely stellar. It is better than any attempt to tackle this difficult topic I have ever seen. Even if you are already fairly advanced in crystallography but haven't quite understood how Direct Methods work: chapter 8 of this book will help you.
(2) Unlike many other textbooks the Glusker/Trueblood is very critical with the method it introduces. Crystal structure determination is sometimes seen by the uninformed as a sort of magic method that creates perfect pictures of molecules out of thin air. The Gluserk/Trueblood describes potential pitfalls and it makes very clear what you can and what you can not learn from a crystal structure. This is important information especially for beginners and "casual users" of crystallography.
(3) Throughout all chapters, the book contains numerous historical references to early scientists and key experiments, some dating back well over hundred years. This may not be vital for understanding modern crystallography, but learning about the history puts everything into perspective.

Further reading:
Another excellent beginner's text on crystallography is the above mentioned book by Werner Massa: Crystal Structure Determination.
A good book to deepen the knowledge one has gained from a beginner's book like the Glusker/Trueblood is Fundamentals of Crystallography by Carmelo Giacovazzo.
If you want to take it one step further and are getting into the refinement of crystal structures, I can recommend Crystal Structure Refinement: A Crystallographer's Guide to SHELXL.

Review
The relationship between youth and the media is one of the most frequented areas in media and cultural studies, but rarely has it been so judiciously, thoroughly, and productively examined as it is in Andy Ruddock's excellent and most useful book.
Professor Graeme Turner
The University of Queensland

'In addition to the provision of a new slant on media power and youth to the existing wealth of studies of media and the young Ruddock achieves a genuinely absorbing scholarly read. By using thought-provoking pertinent case studies underpinned clearly with wider questions posed by sociologists and those working in cultural and media studies before highlightingwhy this is important, he achieves with enthusiasm and skill what many other scholars fail to do. Ruddock achieves the unusual in that he has written a research text that is also useful and accessible teaching tool for undergraduates and even postgraduates. He structures his book through an accessible process of asking a question, establishing why it is interesting, what has been written in the area, providing an insightful case study, and deliberating what can be said on the basis of evidence before considering what this contributes to understanding media influence. It could easily be used to help dissertation students struggling with creating a structured research piece from an interesting idea they have had. [...] It is a study of the here and now that will still offer insight when the cases have passed from immediate memory.' (Ruth Penfold-Mounce 2013-06-25)

"This volume attempts to study youth and media beyond a myopic media effects paradigm that problematizes use as antisocial and deviant....Ruddock pleads for the study of youth and media beyond "something that is bad" and provides several points of departure to move beyond this perspective. Summing Up: Recommended." (N.D. Bowman CHOICE 2013-10-01)

Using a series of case studies running the gamut fromKony 2012 to the life and times of Jackass star Bam Margera, Ruddock discusses how and why youth media studies matter, how it should be studied, and what we can learn from the findings. The book covers the influence and effect of media on youth in several contexts; in addition to the examples already mentioned, he covers the Ryan Florence and David Cameron incident, Insane Clown Posse and censorship, the Columbine high school shootings, child soldiers, and much more. The book does provide a good introductory discussion of a variety of key topics in the study of youth and the media, and does an excellent job of revealing the complexity of the relationship between youth and the media.

Throughout his ten chapters Ruddock frames his discussion in a recurring cyclical figure that flows in the following cycle: Research Question, Underlying issue about media influence, Relevant literature, Exemplifying case study, Outcomes, and Lesson for understanding media influence. This consistency in presentation is a strength of the book, adding some structure to a large and varied subject matter. This is a particularly good structure for students, Ruddock’s intended audience...Youth and Media is a good introductory text on the subject and students of media, sociology and violence will find it an excellent place to start. (LSE Review of Books 2013-10-17)

An excellent follow up to Assertiveness for Earth Angels.
By Andrew Karpenko
Doreen's "Sparkle Book" is an excellent companion to Assertiveness for Earth Angels.
The Sparkle book is a stand alone book too.
In her new book, Doreen thoroughly researches the links between trauma, drama and histamine.
Understanding the links between these issues, and how they impact your mood and relationships, was a "light bulb" moment for me.
What I loved about this book and most of Doreen's books is how she makes information accessible and easy to understand.
I found the drama survey on her www.dontletanythingdullyoursparkle.com website to be very helpful too!
I loved how Doreen really helped with finding so many solutions and gave so many helpful strategies for dealing with anxiety and depression and relationship issues.
I felt more at peace as a result of reading this book and implementing some of the strategies she suggests.
There is a free audio download that is still available on her website if you purchased the book. It contains her powerful angel therapy techniques for healing drama.

Powerful words to help heal those dealing with trauma and drama in their lives
By Tiny Thought Guy
While usually recognized for one of her many books, or card decks, related to angels, Doreen Virtue’s latest book, “Don’t Let Anything Dull Your Sparkle”, uses a blend of her personal wisdom and her formal education (she has various degrees in counseling psychology) to help people ‘break free of negativity and drama’ in their personal lives and in their relationships.

I think it is important to say that this book is not written like a psychology textbook or like a speech from the Dr.’s office, rather Doreen communicates on a heart level that makes it easy for the reader to understand the negative consequences that drama has in our lives and the consequences if we don’t deal with it. In her words, “Drama, a secondary pattern following trauma, is a form of self-sabotage and self-punishment that is highly addictive.”

The premise is that when we have a traumatic experience in life, and the definition of a ‘traumatic experience’ will vary from person to person, our brain produces chemicals to help us deal with the trauma; however, if we don’t deal effectively with the experience the potential is there for us to become addicted to these chemicals. “Our brains are remarkable, ingeniously creating chemicals to insulate and protect us from pain. The trouble is, some of these brain chemicals feel so good that they become addictive.” The addiction to these chemicals then causes us to seek out other situations, forms of entertainment, relationships etc. that stress us out and give us a chemical cocktail high that will eventually cause us physical harm. This trauma-drama process, and a quick and easy questionnaire to help the reader determine their ‘drama quotient’, are all discussed in the first section of the book.

In the second section of “Don’t Let Anything Dull Your Sparkle” Doreen shares numerous ways in which we can return to health and ‘regain our sparkle.’ Specifically, Doreen gives us: ways to reduce stress, information on foods that assist in the healing process, ideas on creating a healthier living environment, natural ways to deal with depression and anxiety, and some surprising information about yoga and how certain forms/types of yoga can actually hinder our health.

The third section of the book deals specifically with regaining our sparkle as we interact with others: whether it is family, friends or co-workers. With so many of the people in our society being addicted to drama we need to ensure that we are in nurturing environments, or that we develop the skills to deal with adverse relationships and not get caught up in destructive patterns.

Regardless of the level of trauma we have experienced in life, all three sections in “Don’t Let Anything Dull Your Sparkle” provide lots of useful and life-improving information. Even if the reader doesn’t feel that they have personally experienced trauma themselves, this book will help the reader gain an understanding of why somebody in their life might be behaving in a self-destructive manner. In other words, this is a powerful book because it can help the reader heal themselves or it can help the reader be more aware and empathetic to the struggles of the people around them.

If the information in this book is not sufficient for the reader, or for those wishing to get more detailed information about some of the studies mentioned by Doreen, there is an extensive bibliography provided as well.

As a closing remark, I want to restate that this book is not one of those ‘heavy’, hard-to-read, self-help books. Doreen Virtue’s uplifting writing style and her lively, sparkly personality very much shines through on these pages and it is very apparent that she is using her own challenges as a foundation for helping people overcome the trauma-drama in their lives. Even if you aren’t dealing with any issues personally, I believe that there will be somebody in your life that will benefit from the words in this book.

Love her and her other works. This one, did not appeal to me.
By sunny74
This book is by a woman that I absolutely love to listen to. I have some of her cards and other books. This one I had a difficult time with because it was a bit too extreme for me. Our diets are already so limited. To limit what we considered healthy food may ring true for her and may help several people, but it does not come near to being true for me. I don't like having to have a problem with every single thing on this planet. It is getting tiring. Be afraid of this. Don't do that. Don't act this way. Feel your feelings, but don't be like that because no one will want to be near you....but just be you. Some mixed messages. Sometimes talking about how to free ourselves or solve problems can create more problems for some. I just can't get past the mixed messages of trying to alleviate fear by using fear. How to be honest and not deny your feelings... but don't really act like that. There is some condemnation in this book and some love.

I believe the intention was to help people gain insight into their own experiences and emotions and also to help gain insight into other people's behavior. I could feel the author's personal feelings. They are judgmental and it is hard to see this as a loving book when I can feel her feelings. The anger was there. The judgment too. The denial of that unlike part of us and others is in this book. The part that wants to say "I accept myself and others" but doesn't really accept them.

I really love Kenworth, The First 75 Years!
By A Customer
I can't put it down! I read it during my lunch, and when I come home from work. I am not a trucker, but have always thought about it. The text, and photos are just WONDERFUL! As a kid, my family drove from CA. to N.Y. many times, and over the years, I guess, I became partial to the Kenworth Truck. Anyways, THANKS very much to Documentary Books for producing such a wonderful, well researched, beautifully (!) photographed book.

I love Kenworths and I am intensely interested enough in them to own one. However, as great as this book is... big and glossy with history and background info on several countries, I feel it could have been oh so much better.
For mine, there were not enough photos of the various models on offer, and only a scant history afforded to the different assembly plants...their opening and closing dates, and a list of all the current plant locations would be helpful.
There are photos of kenworths which are missing their model description. For example; the Australian Kenworth road train picture. Most readers would not know the model number, nor the years in which it was produced.
I would have thought that the W900 A extended hood model deserved a chapter of its own, with all the various big engine options listed and the fact that they are so keenly sought after today. See if you can spot one picture or mention of one in the book. While you are at it, look for a W900B as well.
As much as the T600 series may have revolutionised truck design, Canada and Australia produced their own models and these countries are largely glossed over.
If I was the President of Kenworth, I would have sent the author back to do the job properly. Much attention was focussed on the recent and current model line ups at the cost of the older ( and dare I say) more popular models. While it is easy to get new truck brochures showing interiors etc, it is the older models which are more difficult to obtain details on and it is these which hold moch appeal for fans.
This book took the easy route, and as one reviewer has pointed out, some of the writing reads like a truck brochure...thinly disguised advertising, and that is becasue some of the material is from the truck brochures.
So, if you are into Kenworth by all means buy this book. Just do not expect everything to be there. Some day someone will be passionate and thorough enough to produce a book on Kenworth that rivals those written about Peterbilt and Mack.
If you want to learn more about Kenworth, and in particular Paccar, hunt down a copy of "Paccar The Pursuit Of Quality" by Alex Groner.

Twilight of the Gods (Immortyl Revolution), by Denise Verrico

Vampire lovers Mia and Kurt are on the run from their Forbidden Science rival Gaius Lupus. After narrowly escaping the implosion of Genpath Laboratories, Immortyls Mia Disantini and Kurt Eisen go into hiding in a place they think is safe. All too soon they are discovered, and Kurt is captured by Gaius. When he's rescued with the aid of feral child and teen vampires known as sewer rats, Mia witnesses first-hand the charismatic spell her lover casts over these would-be revolutionaries, who vow to join Kurt in his mission to bring down the house of Gaius. Meeting obstacles to government funding to support the research that will one day allow them to walk in the sun, Kurt builds his forces. Mia navigates the minefield of rat politics, where she is distressed to be shunted into the background; viewed merely as an overly ambitious concubine who stands between the beloved "Loki" and his followers. One in particular-the oddly timid but beautiful Arturo, who threatens to sever the deep bond between Mia and Kurt. Will Kurt and Mia defeat Gaius's brutal attacks and realize their dream of a cure for their condition? Will the new order they establish survive betrayal from within? And...will their love adapt to the challenge of a third partner?

A great sequel
By K.A.S.
Starting off just after we left off in Cara Mia (book one), Mia and Kurt are in hiding having escaped from Genpath Laboratories. We see a return of some characters we met in book one, Mia and Kurt obviously, as well as Gaius and Leisha, and a few more. The war is still going on. Gaius wants to create Weakness-free Imortyls and Mia and Kurt have to work toward stopping Gaius and finding their elusive cure.

While this is all happening, I felt the bulk of the story surrounded the strained relationship between Kurt and Mia. In the previous book there was an utter love and devotion between the two. In this book it seems, that though there is still true love there, the honeymoon phase has definitely ended.

After a fast paced intro, Kurt is captured and taken by Gaius. Mia has to turn to the rats (vagabond street-rat vampires) to rescue him.

During his capture and rescue, Kurt bonds with Arturo, who is very mentally child-like. Once safe, Kurt takes a place as leader of the rats, being dubbed Loki. Arturo stands at his side as mate. On top of being shoved to the side, Mia is treated as if she is no better than a hooker, Kurt's sexual plaything. The rats have absolutely no respect for her. Kurt, by the way still loves Mia just as much as ever, but he cannot leave Arturo which puts serious strain on his relationship with Mia. Think about it, would you agree to share your boyfriend with another man?

Obviously Mia has quite a bit to overcome in this book and it's quite interesting to see her character further develop and deal with these hardships.

This book is very emotional charged and a fast paced read. A great companion and just as enjoyable as her first offering, Cara Mia.

Great Vampire story with a mix of romance and science fiction
By B. Varney
Twilight of the Gods is the second installment of the scientific vampire series, The Immortyl Revolution. It was released this month and continues the story of Kurt and Mia after their escape from Genpath Laboratories. The story begins with Mia and Kurt thinking that they are safe until Gaius captures Kurt.

The story the continues with lots of adventure and action. Mia is the strong vampire in this book but has to deal with being ignored in the new order with the wild teen vampires known as sewer rats. She struggles with her secondary role in this new society because she is used to being strong and independent,

Denise weaves Norse mythology and feminist themes through this book that not only grabs their female readers with a love triangle and the point of view of a female vampire but with a struggle for what she really wants more. Male readers will find the science fiction and battle scenes to their liking.

The vampires, Kurt and Mia continue their search for the cure that in the end may not be exactly what they are looking for.

This book is an excellent read for those who like more action and adventure than just romance.

Fearful Symmetry is the third book in the series and will be coming out soon. Twilight of the Gods is available through Dreamspell and can be purchased at Amazon.com

If you like Denise Verrico and enjoy her books then you can meet her in Lexington, KY on Saturday October 23rd. She will be at the local Halloween event, A Day of Mystical Blood Lust. She will be selling and signing her books as well as leading a panel on Vampires and Science Fiction genre. She will be a great addition to that event and will be available to talk to fans at that time.

Book two is just as good as the first!
By Katrina Michaels
4.5 Stars.

Twilight of the Gods starts off pretty much where the first book, Cara Mia, ended. Mia and Kurt have escaped and are still searching for a cure. However, they soon find that they are being pursued and that their freedom may not last.

An interesting twist is the introduction of a group of young vampires calling themselves rats. Without giving too much away of the plot, there is a twist in the dynamics between the independent Mia and her lover Kurt which pushes their relationship to the limits. Both characters grow and develop, although some of their personality changes are not for the better. It is the emotional development and relationship between Kurt and Mia which makes this book special.

Also, it was very enjoyable to watch Mia's character become mentally and emotionally stronger and continue to fight for her independence. She proves to be an excellent character; not too perfect as many are portrayed, but with realistic faults tempered by her many strengths.

This book is fast-paced, well-written, and a wonderful encompassing read.
